What are the disadvantages of biomass?

Although biomass and wood pellets are widely regarded as one of the most efficient renewable energy sources there are some slight disadvantages to their use.

  • Pellet fuel is bulkier than other fossil fuels
  • Traditional wood pellet boilers will require regular cleaning to maintain efficiency. However, the more advanced boilers will have automatic cleaning systems
  • Wood pellet boilers include ash bins which need to be occasionally emptied and cleaned

However, when these are compared with the Advantages of wood pellets it’s clear that biomass has many benefits and is rapidly growing into one of the most desirable renewable energy sources. Since the introduction of the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI), commercial energy users who adopt biomass as their primary heat source can receive regular payments over a set 20 year period.

The financial, environmental and heating advantages of wood pellets mean that biomass is set to have a bright future in the UK energy market.
